Oil Pressure Light After an Oil Change? Stop, Then Find the Cause

Oil pressure light after an oil change: what to do first
A red oil pressure light after an oil change means stop first and diagnose second. Chevrolet’s engine oil support page says that when its “Oil Pressure Low/Stop Engine” message appears, you safely stop, do not restart the engine, check the oil level as the owner’s manual directs, and contact a dealer.
That is one maker’s wording; your owner’s manual governs your vehicle.
- Light on right after service: read sections 2 and 3.
- A new tick, no light: section 4.
- Still under warranty: section 5.
- Holding a shop’s explanation: section 6.
β Do This: Ask the shop whether pressure was verified with a gauge or only read from the sensor.
βΉοΈ Safety Note: Low oil pressure can damage an engine and, in one documented recall, could stall it. This article is general information, not a diagnosis. Have any oil pressure warning inspected by a qualified technician before you keep driving.
Red oil can, reminder light or check engine light?

The red pressure warning and the oil change reminder are different alerts.
Which light is on?
Chevrolet separates a “Change Engine Oil Soon” reminder from its stop-now pressure message; our oil life monitor percentage guide covers the reminder. A check engine light is a different warning.
When does it come on: start-up, idle or driving?
Note when it appears, and don’t restart the engine to see whether it clears; Chevrolet’s wording says not to.
A warning that never appears
π On the Record: NHTSA recall 13V592 covers certain 2011β2012 Volvo S60s built June 22, 2010 to May 14, 2012 with the 5-cylinder B5254T5 (VIN code 62) engine, which may not warn the driver of low oil pressure. Volvo’s fix was a free software update. NHTSA’s record (retrieved October 12, 2026) doesn’t show whether your VIN is open; check it.
Why an oil change can set off the oil pressure light

A service changes four things the oil system depends on: level, filter, drain plug and oil grade, and a mistake with any is a candidate cause.
Level, filter and drain-plug mistakes
The level is the first check on Chevrolet’s list.
β Do This: Ask the shop to confirm the filter part number and the oil level against your manual.
Wrong oil grade or a disturbed sensor
Chevrolet points owners to the grade in their manual. A sensor or connector disturbed during the work is another candidate.
When the oil change is a coincidence
Not every light is the shop’s doing:
| What you see | Points to | Applies To | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light soon after service | Level, filter, plug, grade | Any vehicle | No document retrieved |
| Light or stall | Oil pump belt or tensioner | 2016β2018 Focus, 2018β2022 EcoSport (1.0L) | NHTSA 23V905 |
| No light, level falling | Warning may not work | 2011β2012 S60 (B5254T5) | NHTSA 13V592 |
| Level falling, no leaks | Oil consumption | 2018β2020 F-150 5.0L | Ford TSB 19-2365 |
Under NHTSA recall 23V905 (retrieved October 12, 2026), a failed oil pump belt or tensioner can cost a covered vehicle its oil pressure. On 2018β2020 5.0L F-150s, Ford’s TSB 19-2365 applies to oil use above 1 quart per 3,000 miles with no visible leaks.
Ticking after an oil change: normal, or a warning sign?
We found no manufacturer or SAE document that calls a tick after an oil change normal, so this article doesn’t.
A light tick that fades
A tick that began right after service is worth tracing to the service: the level, the grade and the filter are what changed.
β Do This: Ask the shop to confirm the oil level and grade, and to check pressure with a gauge.
A tick that stays, or arrives with the light
A tick that stays, or comes with the red light, means stop and have it inspected.
Tick or knock?
A deep, heavy knock is a stronger reason to stop driving.
Warranty, recalls and the shop: who is responsible?
A carmaker can deny a claim only if it can show the shop’s work, the wrong fluid or a missed service caused the failure.
What a carmaker must show to deny a claim
Ford’s MY2026 guide excludes improper fluids (p.16), so a wrong oil grade is a cause a maker can cite. Our oil change warranty rule guide has the FTC’s consumer guidance and the dispute steps.
Check for a recall by VIN first
Check your VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA 23V905 lists a free repair for the Focus and EcoSport ranges above, and our guide to who pays when a bulletin, recall or program applies sorts the documents.
Paper to keep if the shop may be at fault
Keep the invoice, odometer reading and notes on when the light appeared. We found no source on shop liability, so we make no claim.
What to ask the shop to check next
Walk in with specific questions, not just a complaint.
Questions for the shop that did the work
- What oil grade and quantity went in, and is it on the invoice?
- Was the level confirmed against the manual?
- Was the filter part number checked against the spec?
- Was pressure measured with a gauge?
What a proper check should cover
Level, filter and plug leaks, grade, and a pressure reading.
What it can cost, and why there’s no single number
We found no sourced repair costs for this problem, so we give no figure. Get any estimate in writing, with parts and labour listed separately.
β Do This: Ask for the written cause before approving parts: which test showed it.
What happens if you keep driving with the light on
NHTSA’s records describe where low oil pressure can lead.
Engine damage and loss of power
NHTSA says loss of oil pressure in the recalled Focus and EcoSport can stall the engine and cost power braking assist. Its investigation noted owners of 2018β2021 EcoSports reported the warning lamp just before engine failure.
When no warning comes
NHTSA’s Volvo record describes the same endpoint: a driver who isn’t warned may drive until the car stalls.
β Do This: Stop safely, do not restart the engine, and have it inspected.
Oil pressure light after an oil change: questions answered
1. Should I restart the engine after an oil pressure warning?
Chevrolet’s wording says not to restart the engine after its “Oil Pressure Low/Stop Engine” message, because low oil pressure can damage it. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.
2. Can I drive with the oil pressure light on after an oil change?
No. Chevrolet’s guidance is to stop safely, not restart, check the level per the manual, and contact a dealer. Have it inspected first.
3. Is the oil pressure light the same as the oil change reminder?
No. Chevrolet’s “Change Engine Oil Soon” is a reminder to change oil and filter; its pressure message means stop the engine.
4. Why is the oil pressure light on when the oil level is full?
Level is only one of four service items, alongside filter, drain plug and grade; a recall or unrelated fault can also be the cause. Ask the shop for a pressure reading.
5. What should I ask the shop after an oil change warning?
Ask what oil grade and quantity went in, whether level and filter were checked, and whether pressure was measured with a gauge.
6. Why is my engine ticking after an oil change?
We found no document calling it normal. Level, grade and filter are what changed, so have the shop confirm all three.
7. Will ticking after an oil change go away?
We found no source saying it will. A tick that stays, or comes with the red light, needs inspection.
8. Which oil grade should I use after an oil change?
Your owner’s manual’s grade. Chevrolet points owners to it, and Ford’s MY2026 guide excludes improper fluids from warranty coverage.
9. Can a carmaker deny engine coverage after a bad oil change?
Only if it can show the shop’s work, the wrong fluid or a missed service caused the failure, per the FTC.
10. How do I check whether a recall explains my oil pressure light?
Look up your VIN on NHTSA’s recall tool; 23V905 and 13V592 cover only the model-year ranges named above.
Your next step after an oil change warning
Write down when the light came on, keep the invoice details, check your VIN for open recalls, and have a qualified technician inspect the vehicle before you drive it. Then you will know whether to suspect the service, a recall or an unrelated fault.
