How much should I be paying for an oil change?
The short answer, with the formula
An oil change costs quarts × price per quart, plus one filter, plus labor, plus fees and tax. On October 15, 2026, Walmart Auto Care Centers posted packages from $28.88 (conventional) to $76.88 (premium synthetic), each covering up to 5 quarts. Bankrate puts the U.S. average at $66, from 2024 Yelp data.
Find your situation
- Holding a quote: use the bill breakdown and quote table.
- Truck or V8 owner: your engine’s quarts explain the gap from the ad.
- Choosing a shop: see the shop comparison.
- New car: check whether a maintenance plan pays for it.
- DIY: see what doing it yourself saves.
ℹ️ Safety Note: A DIY oil change means lifting the vehicle and handling hot oil. This guide gives no procedure; follow your owner’s manual or use a shop.
What’s actually on an oil change bill

Parts, labor and the lines in between
An oil change bill has five lines: oil, filter, labor, quarts above the package, and fees and tax. YourMechanic’s Ford F-150 average shows the split for a mobile mechanic: $142 total, $37 parts and $105 labor.
💵 On these numbers: Costs shown are typical ranges, not quotes. Labor rates vary sharply by region and between dealer and independent shops, and parts pricing moves. Use these to judge whether a quote is in the right neighborhood, not to predict your invoice.
Menu price, flat rate or hourly
AAA describes three ways shops charge: a menu price bundling parts and labor, a flat rate set by “book time”, and hourly billing, which it calls much less common. Almost half of shops charge $120–$159 an hour, per the 2025 PartsTech report AAA cites.
Add-ons that aren’t the oil change
A cabin air filter runs $30–$70 with parts and labor, per Bankrate (October 2024). Get a written estimate splitting parts from labor before approving extras (AAA’s advice), then size it with our Repair Cost Estimator.
Why your engine’s quarts set the price

Extra quarts: where the advertised price stops
AAA names three reasons an oil change beats the coupon price: synthetic oil, more than five quarts, or an uncommon filter. Walmart’s packages include up to 5 quarts, with an unpublished charge for more, so ask first.
Find your capacity in the owner’s manual, not online
Oil capacity changes by engine, not just by model. Ford’s 2020 F-150 owner’s manual has a separate capacities page for each of five engines, including the 5.0L V8’s capacities and specifications. Third-party sites disagree on some figures, so use the manual’s.
Price follows engine: YourMechanic’s F-150 page (checked October 15, 2026) lists $313.63 for a 2016 5.0L V8, $249.67 for a 2018 3.5L EcoBoost.
Rebuild your quote in one table
| Quote line | How to check it | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Oil | Quarts × price per quart | Manual (quarts); shop (price) |
| Extra quarts | Your capacity minus 5 | Package terms |
| Filter | One, matching your manual | Shop or parts store |
| Labor | Total minus oil and filter | AAA: often $120–$159/hr |
| Fees and tax | Each on its own line | Itemized estimate |
More quarts on the invoice than your manual lists? Check for an overfill or wrong-oil mistake.
Dealer, quick-lube, independent or mobile: what changes
| Where | Price on record | What it includes | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walmart Auto Care Center | $28.88–$76.88 | Up to 5 quarts + filter; varies by location | Walmart, Oct 15, 2026 |
| Mobile mechanic | $142, F-150 average | $37 parts + $105 labor | YourMechanic, Oct 15, 2026 |
| Independent shop | $120–$159/hr | Labor rate only | AAA (PartsTech 2025) |
| Dealer | Labor often 25%+ higher | Labor comparison only | AAA, 2026 |
| All shop types | $66 average | Not itemized | Bankrate (Yelp 2024) |
A posted menu: one chain’s prices
Walmart’s quick-lube menu is one chain on one date, not a national average, but its terms are in writing.
Dealer vs independent labor
AAA puts dealer labor often 25% or more above independents.
Synthetic vs conventional at the counter
Walmart listed standard conventional at $38.88 and full synthetic at $72.88 on October 15, 2026. For whether synthetic pays off, see synthetic vs conventional cost per mile.
When an oil change should cost you nothing
Included maintenance plans
ToyotaCare covers normal factory scheduled maintenance, including oil and filter changes, for 2 years or 25,000 miles on new Toyotas, whichever comes first; the Mirai gets 3 years or 35,000 miles. Not every maker does this: Ford’s 2026 warranty guide lists oil changes and filters as maintenance it doesn’t cover (p.18).
Paid oil changes: any shop or DIY, with proof
Federal rule 16 CFR 700.10 lets a maker tie free maintenance to its dealers, but not maintenance you pay for. Under the oil change warranty rule, any shop or DIY works if you keep dated proof.
What changing your own oil really saves
You still pay for oil and filter
A DIY oil change removes labor, not parts. In YourMechanic’s F-150 average, you’d skip the $105 labor and still pay the $37 parts.
Disposal and records are on you
EPA advises taking used oil, in a leak-proof container, to a collection center that usually takes drained filters too. Oil from one change can contaminate a million gallons of fresh water, per EPA’s used oil recycling guidance. Log the oil, quantity and filter for your warranty.
When a shop is the better call
✅ Do This: If you can’t safely raise and support the vehicle, use a shop. Ask for the invoice to list the oil specification, quarts used and filter part number.
What stretching an oil change to save money can cost
What the warranty booklets say
Ford’s 2026 warranty guide says skipped maintenance invalidates coverage on the parts affected (p.3). Toyota’s MY2026 Tacoma guide warns that failing to replace oil and filter regularly can cause oil starvation or gelling, and those repairs aren’t covered (p.34).
Use the maker’s limit, not a guess
As one example, Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma maintenance guide sets oil and filter replacement at 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first (p.39). Check your maker’s oil change limits before stretching an interval.

Before you pay for your next oil change
Read your engine’s oil capacity and specification in the owner’s manual. Get a written quote that splits parts from labor, and check each line against the table above. Over five quarts? Ask the extra-quart price first. On a newer car, check your maintenance plan before paying.
