Honda 1.5T Oil Dilution Warranty End Dates for Civic and CR-V

Honda 1.5T oil dilution warranty coverage ended six years after first sale — 2024 for a car first sold in 2018. Here’s the date math for your car.

Honda 1.5T Oil Dilution warranty timeline showing six years and unlimited miles from the original sale date

Is your Civic or CR-V still covered for gas in the oil?

For almost every car, no. Honda extended oil dilution coverage on 2016–18 Civics and 2017–18 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo to 6 years, unlimited miles, from the original sale date (bulletins 19-032 and 19-033). As of 17 October 2026, any car first sold before 17 October 2020 is past it.

One clock may still be running: the bulletins put engine and transmission software under the emissions warranty beyond 6 years.

  • Oil still rising or a warning light on: see the symptoms section.
  • Holding a repair quote: see the cost section.
  • Bought the car used: your clock started at the first owner’s purchase.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Excess fuel in the oil can cause misfires and loss of power. If the oil level reads well above the upper mark, the oil smells strongly of fuel, or the check-engine light flashes, have the car inspected by a qualified technician before long drives. This article explains coverage and costs; it is not a repair procedure.

The 50-state warranty extension

Eligibility goes by VIN nationwide, per Honda’s Civic warranty-extension bulletin (19-033).

The 21-state product update

It covered cars sold in AK, CT, IL, IN, IA, ME, MA, MI, MN, MT, NE, NH, NJ, NY, ND, OH, PA, RI, SD, VT and WI.

Not included: CR-V LX and 2019-on models

Bulletin 19-032 doesn’t list the CR-V LX, and Honda said 2019 models were updated at the factory.

What Honda put in writing, bulletin by bulletin

Honda handled this as a product update and a warranty extension, not a US safety recall.

Honda Oil Dilution software update and six-year warranty extension for camshafts, rocker arms and spark plugs
Honda’s Oil Dilution response included software updates, an oil change and extended coverage for certain engine components.

2018: the cold-weather product update (18-114, 18-124, 18-137)

CR-Vs in five states got it in October 2018; it reached 21 states on 5 December and Civics on 21 December.

April 2019: six years, unlimited miles (19-032, 19-033)

Honda’s April 2019 dealer announcement moved camshaft and rocker arm coverage from 5 years/60,000 miles to 6 years/unlimited miles. The bulletins add spark plugs.

2024 revision: wording widened to engine components

The current revision of Honda bulletin 19-032 covers engine components “such as camshafts, rocker arm assemblies, or spark plugs” damaged by these concerns.

📋 On the Record: Honda bulletin 19-032 (v4, 12 April 2024): 2017–18 CR-V EX, EX-L, Touring; 6 years, unlimited miles from original sale; salvage and branded titles excluded. Expired for cars first sold before 17 October 2020. Checked 17 October 2026.

🔍 Why It Happens: A cold direct-injection engine lets some fuel reach the oil; a warm engine evaporates it, short cold trips don’t. Honda’s update made the engine warm faster.

When your oil dilution coverage ended — and what’s still running

Add six years to the original sale date: that is when Honda’s extension ended.

The six-year clock: start from the original sale date

Ask a Honda dealer for the warranty start date on your VIN.

The software clock: emissions warranty on the engine computer

The bulletins place ECU and TCM software under the emissions warranty beyond 6 years. EPA’s emissions warranty guidance covers the engine computer for 8 years or 80,000 miles from the original sale, used cars included.

That covers software, not cam damage; ask the dealer in writing whether the oil change and A/C control unit are included.

What voids it: salvage and branded titles

Vehicles ever totaled, sold for salvage or carrying a branded title are excluded.

Rising oil, gas smell, misfire codes: signs that match the bulletins

Honda’s bulletins name specific codes and one specific noise.

What Honda’s bulletins list (P0300–P0304, P0172, whirling noise)

  • P0300–P0304: random or single-cylinder misfire
  • P0172: fuel system too rich
  • A whirling noise from the engine compartment

What owners report (rising oil level, fuel smell)

Owners report a rising oil level and fuel smell on the dipstick; Honda Canada says some dilution is normal. To confirm it’s fuel, see an oil level rising with a gas smell.

After a fresh oil change, first rule out a shop overfill.

What to ask the service desk

✅ Do This: Have a Honda dealer confirm the codes and oil condition. Ask for VIN status on 18-114, 18-124, 18-137, 19-025, 19-032, 19-033, 19-037 and 19-038, stored codes printed on the repair order, and a written emissions-warranty answer. Then check your VIN for open recalls on NHTSA.

What the repair costs once Honda’s coverage has ended

Honda’s bulletins list the labor times dealers were paid — a yardstick for quotes.

💵 On these numbers: Costs shown are typical ranges, not quotes. Labour rates vary sharply by region and between dealer and independent shops, and parts pricing moves. Use these to judge whether a quote is in the right neighbourhood, not to predict your invoice.

Source: Honda Service Bulletins 19-032 (CR-V) and 19-033 (Civic), warranty flat-rate times.

Software update and oil change: labor time

0.6 hours, or 0.8 with an A/C control unit.

Camshaft and rocker arm replacement: labor time

5.8 hours with inspection on a CR-V, 5.6 on a Civic, parts extra.

Turning hours into dollars at your shop’s rate

💵 What It Costs: At an example $150 an hour (not a quoted rate), 5.8 hours is $870 in labor before parts; retail shops may quote more hours.

Keeping fuel out of the oil on a 1.5T you plan to keep

Honda says short drives and extreme cold make dilution worse.

Check the oil level, not just the oil-life percentage

An oil life monitor percentage won’t show a climbing level, so check the dipstick regularly.

Short trips in the cold are the worst case

Combine short errands when you can. Independent or DIY oil changes keep your warranty intact, so keep every receipt.
