Oil Leak Recalls Documented Part by Part, Cup Plug to Drain Plug
Oil leak recall answers hinge on one detail: Ford’s 3.5L “oil plug” is a 13 mm cylinder-head cup plug, not your drain plug. Here’s why it matters.

Is there a recall for my oil leak?
Whether an oil leak recall covers you depends on which part is leaking. As of October 21, 2026, the record splits three ways.
The three answers in one minute
- Engine cup plug: two Ford recalls cover certain 3.5L EcoBoost 2024–2025 F-150s and Expeditions and 2024 Navigators.
- Oil filter housing: recalled on certain 2024 Land Rovers and 2021–2024 Jaguar F-PACEs.
- Oil drain plug: no recall. If the oil light is on, skip to the stop-driving section.
What “oil plug” means in Ford’s recall
Ford’s “oil plug” is a 13 mm cup plug pressed into the cylinder head, not the drain plug.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Leaking oil can ignite on hot exhaust parts, and rapid oil loss can stall an engine. Have any active leak inspected by a qualified technician.
Drain plug, filter housing or cup plug: find the leak
The leak point decides which record applies.
| Leak point | Recall on record | Applies To |
|---|---|---|
| Engine cup plug | 24V-851 (24S70); 25V-198 (25S30) | Certain 3.5L 2024–2025 F-150 and Expedition, 2024 Navigator |
| Oil filter housing | 24V-450 (N908); 24V-451 (H506) | Certain 2024 Land Rovers; 2021–2024 F-PACE |
| Oil drain plug | None; petition DP22-003 denied | Hyundai and Kia models NHTSA reviewed |

Leak at the bottom of the pan
A wet drain plug points to the plug, washer or pan threads. If it began after a service, see our oil leak after an oil change checks.
Leak higher on the engine
Oil higher up points to a filter housing, a gasket or, on the 3.5L Ford, a cup plug.
✅ Do This: Ask the shop to name the leaking part in writing before you search recalls.
The Ford 3.5L EcoBoost oil plug recalls: 24S70 and 25S30

Ford has two cup plug recalls on its 3.5L GTDI engine, both traced to a misaligned press at Cleveland Engine Plant.
Which trucks and SUVs are included
| Recall (build dates) | F-150 | Expedition | Navigator |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24V-851 (24S70) | Sep 12–Oct 8, 2024 | Sep 23–Oct 6, 2024 | Sep 24–27, 2024 |
| 25V-198 (25S30) | Sep 12, 2024–Mar 27, 2025 | Sep 22, 2024–Feb 9, 2025 | Sep 24–Nov 13, 2024 |
Applies To: 3.5L only; Ford says these weren’t built in VIN order, so check your VIN.
Warning signs and the fix
Ford lists an oil pressure light with reduced power, burning smell or white smoke; its 24S70 filing reports two fires. Dealers inspect and replace plugs free, and paid-up owners may qualify for Ford recall reimbursement.
📋 On the Record: NHTSA lists 25V-198 at 4,356 vehicles. Ford’s January 16, 2026 quarterly report counted 2,444 remedied, so the campaign was open then. Checked October 21, 2026.
Oil filter housing recalls: which vehicles are covered
JLR recalled oil filter housings made from the wrong plastic, which can crack and leak oil onto hot engine parts.
2024 Land Rovers (N908)

Recall 24V-450 covered 1,995 2024 Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Velar vehicles built November 2023 to February 2024. JLR cited seven US claims and a small number of fires.
Jaguar F-PACE and aftermarket housings
Recall 24V-451 covers 150 2021–2024 F-PACEs; recall 22E-039 covered 3,450 aftermarket Evan-Fischer housings. Remedies are free. We couldn’t confirm the JLR campaigns’ current status, so check your VIN.
Drain plug leaks: why there’s no recall
No oil drain plug recall appears in the records we checked. NHTSA denied petition DP22-003 on December 12, 2023.
What NHTSA found
NHTSA’s DP22-003 closing resume reviewed 166 reports on 2005–2022 Hyundai and Kia models and listed no crashes or fires. It found no plug back-out before a first oil change and traced failures to old gaskets left in place.
What Hyundai and Nissan told technicians
Hyundai TSB 23-EM-005H calls the washer one-use and warns against generic aftermarket plugs. Nissan NTB22-003 warns over-tightening can loosen the pan insert on 2022 Rogue 1.5L engines.
✅ Do This: Ask the shop whether it fitted a new washer and torqued the plug to specification.
Who pays: recall, warranty or the shop
Who pays depends on whether a recall, a factory defect or the service caused the leak.
Recall versus service error
Recall remedies are free at a dealer. Otherwise, a carmaker can deny damage it shows the maintenance caused, as our oil change warranty rule guide explains; shop liability is a state-law question.
What a fix costs if you’re paying
| Repair | Typical cost | What It Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Oil pan replacement | $869–$1,093 | RepairPal national average; labor $478–$701, parts $391–$392 |
| Filter housing gasket (Ram 1500) | About $311 | YourMechanic; $64 parts, $247 labor |
💵 On these numbers: Typical ranges, not quotes, excluding taxes. Labor varies by region and shop type. Checked October 21, 2026.
A stripped plug doesn’t always need a new pan; see our stripped drain plug guide.
When an oil leak means stop driving
Ford’s filings list the signs of rapid oil loss: an oil light with reduced power, burning smell or white smoke.
Signs that mean stop
Any of these, or running oil, means pull over and shut the engine off.
What to tell the shop
Tow it in, and ask for a VIN recall check and the leak source in writing; for a 3.5L Ford, cite 24S70 and 25S30.
