Red brake light and a chime on your F-150? Start here
If your F-150 showed a red brake warning with a chime and a low-fluid message, Ford has filed four safety recalls for exactly this. All four cover one defect: a brake master cylinder on 3.5L EcoBoost trucks that can leak fluid into the brake booster, where you can’t see it.
Find your situation:
- The warning is on right now: read the driving guidance in the final section before your next trip.
- You have a recall letter: go straight to the build-date table.
- Your truck isn’t on any list: see what the repair costs outside a recall.
This article is part of our F-150 problems by model year guide. We checked recall status on September 29, 2026.
ℹ️ Safety Note: The brake master cylinder is a safety-critical component, and fluid loss can reduce front braking and lengthen stopping distance. The information here is for general understanding; have any brake fluid warning inspected by a qualified technician before continued driving.
What the brake fluid warning looks like on these trucks

The warning arrives in two stages, and Ford’s own recall filings describe both.
First stage: chime, message, red light
When the brake fluid reservoir drops to a set level, you get an audible chime, a message center alert, and the red brake indicator. Ford’s 22V-150 filing states that braking ability is unchanged at that point.
Second stage: the pedal feels different
If you keep driving, the same filing says brake pedal travel and feel may change, and you may need more pedal effort. This is the stage that matters, because front braking is starting to weaken.
🔍 Why It Happens: The warning is triggered by the fluid level in the reservoir, not by a brake pressure test. It tells you fluid has gone somewhere. The next section explains where.
Why brake fluid disappears with no puddle under the truck

The fluid doesn’t leave the truck; it moves inside it.
Where the fluid goes
Ford’s filings say a seal at the rear of the brake master cylinder can let fluid pass from the front-wheel circuit into the brake booster, the large canister behind it. Nothing drips onto your driveway.
Seal roll versus contamination
In 2016, Ford blamed the rearmost cup seal rolling out of position. NHTSA then opened recall query RQ16-001 to test whether that recall’s scope was large enough. Ford’s 2020 filing (20V-332 safety recall report) named brake fluid contamination interfering with the seal as the main cause, with seal roll secondary.
Ford’s chronology says its supplier, Hitachi, added a silicone lubricant to the seal in August 2016 and had further improvements in production by January 31, 2017. For the engine’s other known issues, see our 3.5 EcoBoost problems by generation breakdown.
Which 2013–2018 F-150s are in the four recalls
Build date decides coverage, not model year. Ford’s filings state these trucks were not produced in VIN order.
The four campaigns by build date
| NHTSA / Ford number | Applies To | Build window | Filed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16V-345 / 16S24 | 2013–2014 F-150, 3.5L EcoBoost | Dearborn: Aug 1, 2013–Aug 22, 2014; Kansas City: Aug 1, 2013–Aug 31, 2014 | May 2016 |
| 20V-332 / 20S31 | 2014–2017 F-150, 3.5L EcoBoost | Sep 1, 2014–Aug 1, 2016 | June 2020 |
| 22V-150 / 22S11 | F-150 3.5L EcoBoost (plus 2016–2017 Expedition, Navigator) | Aug 2, 2016–Jan 31, 2017 | March 2022 |
| 25V-236 / 25S37 | 2017–2018 F-150, Expedition, Navigator, 3.5L EcoBoost | Feb 1, 2017–Jun 30, 2017 | April 2025 |
Source: NHTSA Part 573 filings and Ford’s 16S24 dealer notice. For 22V-150, Ford’s filing lists the F-150s as 2017 models, while NHTSA’s campaign summary lists 2016–2018.
Engines not included
Every campaign is limited to the 3.5L EcoBoost. An F-150 with any other engine is outside all four, even with identical symptoms.
📋 On the Record: NHTSA 25V-236 (Ford 25S37) extends coverage to trucks built February 1 to June 30, 2017. Ford cited 17 F-150 warranty claims in that window and reported no known accidents or injuries tied to it. Status checked September 29, 2026: remedy listed as available.
How to check your VIN and what the dealer replaces
Your 17-digit VIN settles coverage faster than any table.
Checking the VIN
Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup tool , which lists unrepaired recalls on your truck.
What the free repair includes
Under all four campaigns, the dealer replaces the brake master cylinder free of charge. The dealer also replaces the brake booster if the master cylinder is found leaking.
If your recall already shows completed
A completed recall means the part was replaced. If the warning comes back, book an inspection and bring your repair paperwork. Ford’s reimbursement window for owners who paid before the 22V-150 notices ended on May 13, 2022.
✅ Do This: Ask the service advisor to check your VIN against campaigns 16S24, 20S31, 22S11 and 25S37 in Ford’s OASIS system. Ask them to confirm in writing whether the booster was inspected for brake fluid.
Not in any recall? What the repair costs out of pocket
If your truck has another engine or falls outside every build window, you pay for the same repair yourself.
💵 On these numbers: Costs shown are typical ranges, not quotes. Labour rates vary sharply by region and between dealer and independent shops, and parts pricing moves. Use these to judge whether a quote is in the right neighbourhood, not to predict your invoice.
Master cylinder only
💵 What It Costs: RepairPal’s national estimate for an F-150 master cylinder replacement is $433–$537 across model years, and $376–$488 on its 2017-specific page (retrieved September 29, 2026).
When the booster is also replaced
Fluid in the booster can mean replacing both parts, which adds a second major component and more labour. We have no sourced figure for the combined job. Ask the shop to quote each part and the labour hours separately.
Can you keep driving with the brake warning on?
Ford’s filings describe a gradual sequence, not an instant total brake failure.
What the filings say happens next
If fluid loss continues past the warning, front braking weakens while the rear brake circuit keeps full function. The 22V-150 filing states that reduced front braking can extend stopping distance and raise crash risk.
What to do today
⚠️ Watch Out: Topping up the reservoir can hide the warning without stopping the leak into the booster. If the pedal already feels different, have the truck inspected before driving it again.
✅ Do This: Ask the shop to check the fluid level against the reservoir marks, inspect the booster for brake fluid, and run your VIN for all four campaigns.
Frequently asked questions
1. Which F-150s are in the brake master cylinder recall?
3.5L EcoBoost F-150s built in specific windows between August 2013 and June 2017, across four Ford campaigns. Your VIN confirms coverage.
2. Does the recall cover the 2.7L EcoBoost?
No. All four brake master cylinder recalls are limited to the 3.5L EcoBoost, so other F-150 engines fall outside them.
3. What does the red brake light and chime mean?
Your F-150’s brake fluid reservoir has dropped to a set level; Ford’s filings say braking is unchanged at first. Have it inspected promptly.
4. Why is my F-150 losing brake fluid with no leak?
On recalled trucks, brake fluid passes from the master cylinder’s front circuit into the brake booster, so nothing drips outside.
5. Does Ford replace the brake booster under the recall?
Only when needed. Dealers always replace the master cylinder, and replace the brake booster when the master cylinder is leaking.
6. Is the recall repair free?
Yes. All four campaigns list master cylinder replacement, and booster replacement where required, as free at Ford and Lincoln dealers.
7. My recall shows completed but the warning is back. What now?
Book a brake inspection, bring your recall paperwork, and ask the dealer to check the booster for brake fluid.
8. How many recalls cover this F-150 brake fluid leak?
Four: 16V-345, 20V-332, 22V-150 and 25V-236, each extending the build dates covered by the earlier campaign.
9. Is it safe to drive with the brake fluid warning on?
Braking is unchanged at the first warning, but continued fluid loss weakens front brakes and lengthens stopping distance. Have it inspected before regular driving.
10. What does a master cylinder cost outside the recall?
RepairPal estimates $433–$537 nationally for an F-150 master cylinder replacement; regional labour rates and dealer versus independent pricing shift this.
