The Correct F-150 Oil Change Interval for Monitor or Severe Duty

Oil Change Interval explained with an F-150 oil life monitor and maintenance indicators

Which F-150 oil change interval applies to your truck?

Ford does not publish one oil change number for every truck. Its own guidance says requirements vary by vehicle, so your interval comes from your truck’s Scheduled Maintenance chapter or from its oil monitor.

Start here:

  • Message on the display: read the next section.
  • Holding a 5,000-mile quote: jump to the cost section.
  • Still under warranty: jump to the warranty section.
  • Towing or idling a lot: read the severe duty section.

This is one maintenance question inside our F-150 problems by year guide.

How the F-150 oil life monitor decides it’s time

Ford’s Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor is not a simple mileage countdown. Ford says it works from vehicle use, operating conditions and time since the last service.

Oil Change Interval calculation showing vehicle use, operating conditions and service time
Ford’s oil-life monitor considers vehicle use, operating conditions and time when determining when an oil change is due.

What the two messages mean

Ford says “Change Engine Oil Soon” appears at about 5% oil life remaining, and “Oil Change Required” appears when none remains.

Why you must reset it

Ford says the monitor must be reset after each oil change. The Oil Change Indicator Reset page in your manual covers the steps (the 2020 F-150 manual lists one).

๐Ÿ” Why It Happens: Because the monitor counts operating conditions and elapsed time, not distance alone, two trucks with the same odometer reading can reach the message at different points.

Normal vs severe duty: what Ford’s manual says by year

To find your F-150 oil change interval, open the Normal Scheduled Maintenance chapter of your model year’s owner’s manual; if your driving matches the conditions in the Special Operating Conditions chapter, use that schedule instead.

Your applicable F-150 maintenance schedule can depend on whether your driving falls under normal or special operating conditions.

F-150 oil type and capacity by engine and model year

Oil grade and capacity depend on your engine, so confirm both in the Capacities and Specifications pages for your exact engine and year. The 2020 F-150 manual has separate pages for the 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.0L diesel, 3.3L, 3.5L EcoBoost and 5.0L.

What oil changes every 5,000 vs 10,000 miles cost

These are arithmetic scenarios, not Ford intervals: a 5,000-mile habit means twice the services.

The maths over 100,000 miles

100,000 รท 5,000 = 20 changes; 100,000 รท 10,000 = 10 changes. The difference is 10 changes.

SourcePer changeWhat it includes10 extra changes
YourMechanic$142$37 parts + $105 labor; mobile service; 2011โ€“2020 engines listed$1,420
RepairPal$183โ€“$212Oil, filter, drain plug gasket, leak check, light reset; shop type and date not stated$1,830โ€“$2,120

๐Ÿ’ต What It Costs: Figures are as listed on each site’s F-150 page on October 7, 2026. Only YourMechanic splits parts and labor; neither states dealer versus independent.

๐Ÿ’ต On these numbers: Costs shown are typical ranges, not quotes. Labour rates vary sharply by region and between dealer and independent shops, and parts pricing moves. Use these to judge whether a quote is in the right neighbourhood, not to predict your invoice.

Oil changes, warranty coverage and the records to keep

Ford’s Warranty Guide puts maintenance on the owner. In the 2026 Warranty Guide, Ford says failing to perform scheduled maintenance as specified in the Owner’s Manual invalidates coverage on parts affected by the lack of maintenance.

Records worth keeping

Ford says to keep receipts with the vehicle, though the 2026 guide adds Ford cannot deny warranty solely for lacking receipts. Oil changes and filters are maintenance items the warranty does not pay for.

If a claim is questioned

โœ… Do This: Ask the dealer which scheduled item they say was missed and how it affected the failed part, because the guide ties invalidation to parts affected. See also our Ford powertrain warranty by year article.

๐Ÿ“‹ On the Record: Ford Warranty Guides for model years 2026 and 2023 contain this maintenance wording. Status checked October 7, 2026. Other model years: check your own guide; this is not legal advice.

What ‘Oil Change Required’ means if you wait

Ford says this message appears when no oil life remains. Ford’s own guidance adds that following the maintenance schedule helps protect against major repair expenses resulting from neglect.

What to do now

Ford’s monitor page gives no safe distance past zero, so treat the message as due now: book the change, reset the monitor afterwards and keep the receipt.

F-150 oil change interval: quick answers

1. How often should you change oil in an F-150?

Ford says follow your truck’s Scheduled Maintenance chapter or its oil monitor; your model year’s manual sets the oil change interval.

2. What does “Change Engine Oil Soon” mean on a Ford?

Ford says the F-150 oil change message “Change Engine Oil Soon” appears at about 5% oil life remaining.

3. What does “Oil Change Required” mean?

4. Must I reset the oil life monitor after a change?

Yes. Ford says the oil life monitor must be reset after each oil change, using the steps in your manual.

5. What does the F-150 oil monitor use?

Ford lists vehicle use, operating conditions and time since the last service when it calculates the oil change.

6. What counts as severe duty for an F-150?

Your model year’s manual lists the conditions in its Special Operating Conditions chapter; follow that oil change schedule if your driving matches.

7. Is a 5,000-mile F-150 oil change necessary?

Follow your monitor or your manual’s Normal or Special Operating Conditions schedule; a shop’s 5,000-mile suggestion is not Ford’s rule unless your manual says so.

8. How much does an F-150 oil change cost?

YourMechanic averages $142 ($37 parts, $105 labor) for mobile service; RepairPal lists $183โ€“$212. Shop type and region change the oil change price.

9. Does towing or idling shorten the oil change interval?

Ford says the monitor weighs operating conditions, so heavy use can bring the message sooner; check your manual’s Special Operating Conditions chapter.

10. Do oil changes affect my Ford warranty?

Ford’s guide says skipped scheduled maintenance invalidates coverage on affected parts. Keep receipts and read your own warranty guide.

Your next step

Match your display message to the section above, open your model year’s maintenance chapter, and keep every receipt. Then run your own mileage through the Maintenance Interval Planner before agreeing to a shorter schedule.
