Will a Tune Void a 2021–2024 F-150 Warranty? What Stays Covered

F-150 tune warranty void illustration showing how a tune can affect a specific warranty claim without voiding the entire warranty

Short answer: a tune can sink a claim, not the whole warranty

The short answer

A tune doesn’t automatically void your Ford powertrain warranty. Ford excludes damage caused by non-Ford software, and the FTC says a maker must show aftermarket equipment caused the repair.

Who this covers

This covers 2021–2024 gas F-150s. Pick your situation:

  • Inside 3 years/36,000 miles: read the Ford Performance section.
  • Between 36,000 and 60,000 miles: read the clock section.
  • Holding a denied claim: start with the FTC section.
  • Past 5 years/60,000 miles: Ford’s published powertrain terms have ended.

ℹ️ Safety Note: A tune changes how the computer runs your engine and can affect emissions compliance. This isn’t legal advice. Have a qualified technician install and check any tune.

What Ford’s own Warranty Guide says about tunes

What Ford lists as not covered

The 2021, 2023 and 2026 Guides exclude damage from non-Ford parts or software that fail or cause a Ford part to fail, including performance chips.

📋 On the Record: Ford’s 2023 Model Year Warranty Guide, “Damage Caused by Alteration or Modification,” excludes non-Ford software “other than a certified emissions part or software.” The 2021 and 2026 Guides match; we didn’t read 2022 or 2024. Checked October 8, 2026.

Ford’s warranty language focuses on damage caused by non-Ford software rather than automatically voiding every warranty claim.

What the Guide leaves undefined

It doesn’t define “certified.” CARB’s orders for other tunes call themselves exemptions, not certifications, so ask Ford in writing whether your tune counts.

What the FTC says Ford has to show

Aftermarket parts alone don’t void coverage

The FTC’s tips on auto warranties say a manufacturer may not deny coverage unless it shows the aftermarket equipment caused the repair. The warranty stays in effect for other parts.

The key warranty question is whether the aftermarket modification caused the failure being claimed.

When a maker can still deny a claim

Ford’s exclusion ties to a failure, so causation decides. A cracked piston after a tune raises it; a failed seat heater doesn’t.

Where ECU software fits

The FTC’s tips don’t mention ECU software; treat them as principle and Ford’s Guide as contract. See our F-150 problems matched to documented coverage.

The clock starts at in-service, not install

Ford Performance’s limited warranty runs for the balance of 36 months or 36,000 miles from your Warranty Start Date, with a Ford dealer or ASE/Red Seal installer, registration and 91-octane fuel. A truck in service before October 8, 2023 is already past three years. Compare Ford’s powertrain warranty.

Third-party tunes, CARB orders and EPA tampering rules

Third-party tunes and CARB orders

Any calibration not from Ford is non-Ford software under the Guide. A CARB Executive Order exempts a named aftermarket part for named applications; read yours.

What EPA says about tuning

EPA’s 2020 tampering policy says ECU tuners might be illegal defeat devices for a vehicle’s whole life. EPA typically doesn’t act when a documented reasonable basis, such as a CARB exemption, exists.

⚖️ Before you modify: Federal law prohibits tampering with emissions controls, and EPA’s policy lists civil penalties for individuals too. Check your state’s inspection rules first.

✅ Do This: Ask the installer, in writing, for the part number and CARB order number for your exact year and engine.

Tune now or wait? Decide by your warranty clock

Your decision turns on your Warranty Start Date and mileage. Illustrative: a truck delivered June 1, 2022 reaches 36 months June 1, 2025, or sooner by mileage.

Inside 3 years/36,000 miles

A registered, properly installed Ford Performance calibration carries its own warranty. Factory coverage stays for concerns the tune didn’t cause.

Between 36,000 and 60,000 miles

The tune warranty has ended; the powertrain warranty runs to 5 years/60,000 miles. Ford’s documents don’t say how it treats a Ford Performance tune after month 36; ask in writing.

Past 5 years/60,000 miles

Published terms have ended. Extended plans are separate contracts; see our Ford Protect guide.

Before you flash: questions to put in writing

Ask the tune provider

  • Which part number and CARB order cover my year and engine?
  • When does the warranty start, and what must I register?
  • What happens to a tune-related failure after the term?

Ask the dealer

  • Will you install it and record it on the repair order?

Tune and warranty questions

1. Does a tune void the powertrain warranty?

Not automatically. Ford excludes damage caused by non-Ford software, and the FTC says makers must link aftermarket equipment to the failure.

2. What warranty comes with a Ford Performance tune?

Ford Performance lists 3 years/36,000 miles with a dealer or ASE/Red Seal installer and registration.

3. Does a tune restart the warranty clock?

No. Ford Performance’s warranty runs for the balance of 36 months or 36,000 miles from your Warranty Start Date.

4. Is a Ford Performance tune emissions legal?

Its 3.5L listing cites CARB orders D-431-12 (2024) and D-431-17 (2025); 2026 is non-California only. Confirm in writing.

5. Can a dealer deny my whole warranty over a tune?

FTC guidance says the rest of the warranty stays in effect; a maker can deny a claim it shows the equipment caused.

6. Does a non-Ford tune count as non-Ford software?

Yes. Ford’s Guide excludes damage it causes, apart from a “certified” emissions part or software, which it doesn’t define.

7. Is a third-party tune legal for road use?

Look for a CARB Executive Order covering your year and engine; EPA says ECU tuners might be illegal defeat devices.

8. What happens after the tune warranty ends?

Ford’s documents don’t say how tune-related failures are handled after 36 months or 36,000 miles; ask in writing.

9. Can Ford tell if I tuned my truck?

Ford hasn’t published how it checks calibrations, and owner reports conflict; don’t assume a tune is invisible.

10. How long is the Ford powertrain warranty?

Five years or 60,000 miles from the Warranty Start Date, whichever comes first, covering engine, transmission and drive components.

Your next step

Find your Warranty Start Date, read your model year’s Guide, and get the tune provider’s terms in writing before you flash. If a claim is denied, ask which failure Ford ties to the tune.
