The 2021–2023 F-150 Parking Brake Fault and Its Real Recall Scope

Parking Brake recall 23S35 showing an F-150 rear axle wiring harness fault

Parking brake fault on your F-150? Start here

If your 2021–2023 F-150 shows a parking brake fault, Ford safety recall 23S35 (NHTSA campaign 23V-509) is the first thing to rule in or out. It covers trucks that meet three conditions, and the dealer repair is free.

The three conditions that decide coverage

  • 2021, 2022 or 2023 model-year F-150
  • Single exhaust system
  • Built between January 8, 2020 and February 25, 2023

If your truck doesn’t match

Dual-exhaust trucks and 2024-and-later F-150s sit outside this campaign, so the same warning points to a different cause. Start with every documented F-150 problem by model year, then have the system diagnosed. If the brake has already applied itself while you were moving, skip to the section on whether to keep driving.

ℹ️ Safety Note: The electric parking brake is a safety-critical braking system, and Ford states that unintended application while driving can cause loss of control. The information here is for general understanding; have any parking brake warning inspected by a Ford dealer or qualified technician before normal driving.

What the 23S35 wiring fault looks like from the driver’s seat

Parking Brake warning with ABS and electronic locking rear differential warnings on an F-150
A damaged rear wiring harness can trigger multiple warning signals on a covered F-150.

Ford lists three warnings that can signal this fault on covered 2021–2023 single-exhaust F-150s: a parking brake warning, an ABS warning, or an electronic locking rear differential warning.

Warning lights Ford lists

The recall filing names a parking brake warning light and message on the instrument cluster. Ford’s owner FAQ adds ABS and e-locker warnings, because the same harness carries the rear wheel speed sensor and locking-differential circuits. On a covered truck, those lights can trace back to one worn harness, not two separate failures.

Unintended activation while moving

Ford’s filing counts 299 reports of unintended parking brake activation, and 19 of them alleged it happened while driving. Ford reported no crashes or injuries. That’s rare, but it’s why a warning on a covered truck shouldn’t wait for your next oil change.

Why the rear axle harness wears through

Parking Brake fault caused by F-150 rear axle wiring harness chafing and short to ground
Repeated contact with the axle housing can wear through the harness and create a short to ground.

The fault starts with a wiring bundle rubbing against metal.

Harness meets axle housing

On affected trucks, the rear axle wiring harness can contact the rear axle housing. Over time, that contact wears through the abrasion-resistant tape and then the circuit insulation, exposing copper wire. Ford’s filing notes that corrosion on the axle housing can speed the wear.

How a short to ground applies the brake

Ford’s testing found the parking brake can activate if the low-side EPB motor circuit shorts to ground against the housing. Ford’s filing doesn’t explain why only single-exhaust trucks are affected, so we don’t speculate.

🔍 Why It Happens: The wiring isn’t failing electrically at first; it’s being physically sanded down. That’s why the problem builds slowly, and why a harness that hasn’t worn through yet can be protected rather than replaced.

Is your F-150 covered? Exhaust and build date decide it

Recall 23S35 covers 2021–2023 F-150s with a single exhaust built from January 8, 2020 through February 25, 2023, which is 870,701 trucks per Ford’s filing.

Covered, not covered, and check-your-VIN

Ford states these trucks weren’t built in VIN order, so neither model year nor a VIN range settles coverage. Only a VIN lookup or a dealer check can confirm it. Ford estimates about 1% of recalled trucks carry the defect, and full details are in Ford’s 23S35 recall FAQ.

Not the same as recall 23S65

Recall 23S35 fixes wiring that can apply the brake. The separate 23S65 rear axle recall covers hub bolts on certain 2021–2023 F-150s, where rollaway in Park is the risk if the parking brake isn’t set. 2021 owners should also check recall 26S48 on the transmission park system, under which Ford advises setting the parking brake every time you park.

What Ford’s recall filing says it found and will fix

Recall 23S35 is a free dealer inspection of the rear axle wiring harness. Depending on what the technician finds, the truck gets either a new harness or a protective tie strap and tape wrap.

918 warranty reports, 299 activations

Ford opened its investigation on February 23, 2023. By July 11, 2023, it counted 918 warranty reports and 3 field reports of wire chafing in North America, received between August 2021 and July 2023. Its Field Review Committee approved the recall on July 14, 2023.

📋 On the Record: Ford’s Part 573 safety recall filing (NHTSA 23V-509 / Ford 23S35, filed July 21, 2023) covers 2021–2023 single-exhaust F-150s built January 8, 2020 – February 25, 2023. Owner letters were scheduled for September 11–15, 2023. Status checked September 29, 2026: remedy active, no superseding campaign found.

The dealer remedy

If the abrasion tape shows wear-through, the dealer fits a new service harness (ML3Z-15K857-C or -A) with a plastic chafe shield. If it doesn’t, the dealer installs a protective tie strap and tape wrap.

What you’ll pay: recall status and the reimbursement deadline

On a covered truck you pay nothing: Ford’s filing states there is no charge for the inspection, harness or wrap.

Recall repairs cost nothing

Ford’s filing sets no end date for the free repair itself, so a covered truck that never had the work done still qualifies. Our September 29, 2026 check found no superseding campaign.

💵 What It Costs: Covered truck: $0 for parts and labour at a Ford or Lincoln dealer, per Ford’s filing. Uncovered truck (dual exhaust, 2024+): we found no sourced repair cost, so get a written diagnosis before accepting any quote. Labour rates vary by region and between dealer and independent shops.

Already paid a shop?

Ford offered reimbursement for this repair when owners paid before notification. Its filing estimated that eligibility would end September 11, 2024, so that window has closed. If you paid and never filed, call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 and reference 23S35.

Should you keep driving it? What to ask the dealer

Ford states that damaged harness wiring can apply the parking brake while driving, risking loss of control.

The documented risk

In-motion reports are rare, 19 in Ford’s data, but a covered truck showing a warning isn’t routine. Call the dealer before any highway drive and ask whether they’d rather tow it in. Skip forum fixes that reposition the harness, because that’s under-vehicle work on a brake circuit.

Three things to say at booking

✅ Do This: (1) Reference Ford recall 23S35 / NHTSA 23V-509. (2) Ask for the rear axle wiring harness inspection for abrasion wear-through. (3) Ask that the invoice state whether the harness was replaced or a tie strap and tape wrap installed.

Your next step

Check three things: model year, single exhaust, and a build date between January 8, 2020 and February 25, 2023. Then run your VIN, because Ford didn’t build these trucks in VIN order. If 23S35 is open, book the free dealer inspection and ask what was done. Recall status checked September 29, 2026.
