What Ford Documents on F-150 10-Speed Transmission Fluid Change

Table of Contents
How often should you change F-150 10-speed fluid?
Ford’s printed interval for a 2018 F-150 is 150,000 miles, and its owner’s manual lists no separate 10-speed interval. Many dealer and forum pages quote 30,000–60,000 miles instead.
Each section below answers a quote, towing, shifting or coverage question using Ford’s own documents. We checked the 2018 manual only, so confirm your model year’s.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Transmission service involves lifting the truck and hot fluid, and a shifting fault changes how it drives. Have any service or shifting problem handled by a qualified technician.
Which F-150s have the 10-speed transmission?

Ford’s 10-speed automatic is the 10R80, and it didn’t reach every truck at once.
2017: either transmission
NHTSA’s investigation file says 2017 F-150s were built with either the six-speed 6R80 or the 10R80. Confirm yours with a dealer VIN lookup.
2018 onward, and exclusions
Ford’s bulletins name the 10R80 for 2017–2020 trucks, and for 2021–2022 trucks built on or before 15 August 2022, excluding the hybrid’s 10R80 MHT. We set no interval for PowerBoost hybrids.
What Ford’s manual says about the interval

📋 On the Record: Ford’s 2018 F-150 owner’s manual maintenance schedule lists “change automatic transmission fluid and filter” every 150,000 miles under normal service. Viewed October 7, 2026. Other years are not yet checked.
So the 2018 manual doesn’t call the fluid “lifetime.”
Towing and no dipstick
The towing tables list no transmission fluid line, yet a worked example on that page mentions 30,000 miles. Ask your dealer which schedule applies. Ford also says the transmission has no dipstick and a dealer should check the fluid.

Do Ford’s bulletins say a fluid change fixes shifting?
No bulletin we retrieved prescribes a fluid change as the fix for harsh or delayed shifts.
2017–2020 trucks
TSB 25-2126, dated 31 March 2025, attributes the condition to CDF clutch cylinder sleeve movement that leaks hydraulic fluid.
🔍 Why It Happens: Clutches apply when pressurized fluid pushes on them. If the sleeve moves, fluid escapes, so a clutch grabs late or hard.
2021–2022 trucks
TSB 24-2254, dated 23 August 2024, starts with a leak test (0.8 hours) and allows 11.0–13.1 hours to replace the cylinder. Those are labour allowances, not prices. Symptoms are in our 10-speed problems guide.
Is your 10-speed under a recall, bulletin or warranty?
Coverage starts with which transmission you have.
The 2026 downshift recall
Recall 26S28 (NHTSA 26V237) covers 2015–2017 six-speed trucks. NHTSA’s investigation EA26001 was limited to the 6R80, so 10-speed trucks aren’t in it. See our 26S28 guide.
Bulletins, warranty and replacement transmissions
A bulletin adds no coverage, and TSB 24-2254 ties coverage to the causal part. The powertrain warranty runs five years or 60,000 miles from the Warranty Start Date (our guide). Recall 25E070 covers certain remanufactured 10R80s. Status checked October 7, 2026.
✅ Do This: Run your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup, then ask the dealer to name the causal part on any warranty claim.
What a 10-speed fluid service costs and includes
The 10-speed uses Motorcraft MERCON ULV, part XT-12-QULV, specification WSS-M2C949-A. Ford says to use only that fluid, no additives, and warns other fluid may void coverage for resulting damage.
Drain-and-fill or exchange
Ford lists about 13.1 qt dry fill for the 2018 3.5L EcoBoost, varying during changes. Ford’s service manual for the same 10R80 in the Ranger describes both methods and sets level by temperature with a scan tool.
Questions to ask the shop
- Which fluid and specification?
- Drain-and-fill or exchange, and how is the level verified?
- What are the itemized parts and labour hours?
💵 What It Costs: Ford publishes no price and we found no verified figure, so we give none. A fair quote itemizes fluid (quarts × price), filter and gasket, and labour hours × the shop’s rate. TSB 25-2126 lists filter HL3Z-7A098-A and pan gasket HL3Z-7A191-B.
Signs it’s time to see a technician
Ford’s manual says to contact a dealer if the transmission slips, shifts slowly or leaks.
Symptoms that shouldn’t wait
- Slipping, slow shifts or a leak under the truck
- Harsh or delayed shifts, with or without a warning light
- Stored codes such as P0751 or P2700, which TSB 25-2126 lists
✅ Do This: Ask the shop to check fluid level at operating temperature, read the PCM and TCM for codes, and say whether TSB 25-2126 or 24-2254 applies to your VIN. Compare any internal repair quote with our repair cost guide.
