Ford recall 26S48 on the 2021 F-150, in plain terms
Recall 26S48 is Ford’s campaign for 2021 F-150s whose 10R80 transmission can briefly engage the park pawl while the truck is moving, damaging the part that holds it in Park. NHTSA tracks it as 26V402. The repair will be free, but Ford anticipates the remedy will be ready in the second quarter of 2027.
What Ford is recalling
The campaign covers 82,570 F-150s within a 741,195-vehicle Ford and Lincoln recall. The risk is a rollaway: the damaged Park system may not hold the truck if the parking brake isn’t set.
Where to start
- If you’re not sure your truck is included, start with the three-condition check below.
- If you’re seeing a wrench light, jump to the warning signs Ford names.
- If you just need to know what to do now, go to the interim-period section.
This page covers one recall. For the rest, see every documented 2021 F-150 problem and the Ford coverage behind it.
âšī¸ Safety Note: The transmission’s Park system keeps an unattended truck from rolling. This article is for general understanding. If your truck shows a Park-related warning or moves after you select Park, have a Ford dealer inspect it before you rely on Park alone.
Is your 2021 F-150 part of the 26S48 recall?

A 2021 F-150 falls under recall 26S48 only if it meets all three conditions in Ford’s filing:
| Condition | Applies To |
|---|---|
| Model year | 2021 F-150 only |
| Transmission | 10R80 with park-by-wire |
| Build date | January 8, 2020 â October 8, 2021 |

Why your VIN is the only real answer
Ford states these vehicles were not produced in VIN order, so two identical trucks from the same week can differ. Run your 17-character VIN through NHTSA’s VIN recall search, or ask a Ford dealer to check it.
The F-150 entry lists only the 10R80, while the 10R80MHT appears only in the Explorer and Aviator entries. If you own a PowerBoost, confirm by VIN rather than assuming either way.
Why a “January 2020” build date is correct
A 2021 truck built in 2020 isn’t a typo. Ford’s dealer notice for a separate recall, 26C10, shows 2021 F-150 Dearborn production beginning January 8, 2020.
Why the park pawl gets damaged while you’re driving

The problem starts inside the transmission’s valve body, not in the parking brake.
The separator plate and the park valve
Ford’s filing says the valve body separator plate may restrict flow to the park valve, which can cause the park pawl to engage briefly during certain commanded shifts. In other words, the transmission itself triggers the engagement while the truck is still moving.
đ Why It Happens: The park pawl is a small lever that locks the transmission’s output when you select Park. It is meant to hold a stopped truck, so engaging while rolling can damage the Park system parts around it.
Why damage shows up later, in Park
You may feel nothing at the moment it happens. According to Ford’s Part 573 safety recall report, a damaged Park system may lose its ability to hold the vehicle when the parking brake isn’t applied.
This is a different recall from 26S28, the 2015â2017 F-150 downshift recall. That one involves a transmission range sensor signal loss on six-speed trucks.
Warning signs Ford tells 2021 F-150 owners to watch for
Ford’s filing names two warnings the truck gives on its own.
Wrench light and a self-applying parking brake
If the transmission range sensor doesn’t reach Park when Park is selected, the cluster shows a wrench light and the electronic parking brake applies automatically. Ford tells owners to contact their dealer if either happens.
Symptoms owners reported to NHTSA
The complaints that started the investigation described vehicles moving after being shifted to Park, refusing to shift into Park, or getting stuck in Park. Those reports came from 2020 Explorer and Aviator owners, not F-150 owners.
Not the same as the 10R80 harsh-shift bulletin
Harsh or delayed shifts point to a separate issue. Ford bulletin 24-2254 covers harsh or delayed engagement and shifts on 2021â2022 F-150s with the 10R80 built on or before August 15, 2022. Our F-150 10-speed transmission problems guide maps the wider pattern.
â Do This: If the wrench light appears or the parking brake sets itself, call a Ford dealer. Ask: “Is recall 26S48 open on my VIN, and can you inspect the transmission Park system?”
Why there’s no 26S48 fix yet, and when it’s coming
Ford filed recall 26S48 before the fix existed, so owners get a warning letter first and a repair letter later.

What the dealer will do, and what it costs you
Dealers will update the powertrain control module software (F-150 part ML3A-14C204-*), inspect the transmission for Park-system damage, and replace damaged components as needed, at no charge.
đ On the Record: Ford safety recall 26S48 / NHTSA 26V402 covers 2021 F-150s with the 10R80 and park-by-wire, built January 8, 2020 to October 8, 2021. Ford’s 26S48 recall page labels this an Advance Notice and expects the remedy in Q2 2027. Status checked September 28, 2026.
What to do with your F-150 until the 2027 fix
Ford’s interim instruction is to apply the electronic parking brake every time you park.
Why Ford says to set the parking brake every time
These trucks have roll-away detection that sets the parking brake if the vehicle moves in Park. However, Ford’s filing notes that the powertrain control module may be asleep after the vehicle has been powered down for a while, and unable to detect movement. Setting the brake yourself closes that gap.
Ford has not issued a do-not-drive or park-outside advisory for this campaign.
What to ask the dealer
â Do This:
- Confirm 26S48 is open on your VIN.
- Ask that every Park-related event (wrench light, self-applying brake, movement in Park) goes on the repair order, with the date.
- If you’ve seen a warning, ask what the dealer can do before the remedy is released.
If you already paid for a Park-system repair
Ford’s filing says it used its general reimbursement plan on file. The eligibility terms weren’t published in the documents we reviewed, so keep your invoices and ask Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
How big is the 26S48 risk, honestly?
Ford’s own numbers put the rollaway risk in proportion.
What Ford’s own numbers say
Ford estimates 1% of the 741,195 recalled vehicles have the defect, and it knows of 24 property-damage allegations and 9 alleged injuries, 2 of them emotional. Those figures cover all five models, not just the F-150.
What the filing doesn’t say about F-150s
The report counts in the filing (220 Ford reports and 10 NHTSA complaints on Explorer and Aviator; 62 and 3 on Expedition and Navigator) include no F-150 figure. That isn’t evidence the truck is safer. Ford built the population from production records of vehicles using the separator plate design that can reduce flow, and the parking-brake habit covers you either way.
26S48 recall FAQ
1. What is the 26S48 recall?
The 26S48 recall is Ford’s campaign for 2021 F-150s whose 10R80 can briefly engage the park pawl while moving, damaging the Park system.
