✅ Do This: Run your VIN through the recall lookup before you authorize any work. If the truck slips or loses drive, ask for Ford’s hydraulic leak test in TSB 25-2475 (operation 252475A).
ℹ️ Safety Note: A transmission that slips, hunts for a gear or loses drive in traffic should be inspected by a qualified technician before you keep driving it. This article explains Ford’s documents and costs; it is not a repair procedure.
Bad transmission or phaser rattle: what each one does

Ford’s bulletin traces harsh or delayed shifts on 2017–2020 F-150s to sideways movement of a sleeve in the CDF clutch cylinder, which lets hydraulic pressure leak. Our guide to the 10-speed’s documented problems goes deeper.
🔍 Why It Happens: Leaked pressure means a clutch may not get what the computer commands, so shifts arrive late or hard.
Harsh, delayed or slipping shifts (the CDF drum)
Ford’s current 10R80 shift bulletin, TSB 25-2475, replaced 25-2301 and 25-2126. It lists codes such as P0751, P0731 and P2700.
The cold-start rattle (phasers)
Ford describes a rattle on a cold start, or a knock at hot idle, from worn VCT units on 2017–2020 3.5L trucks (TSB 23-2143).

2017–2020 with the 3.5L and 10-speed: both apply
Both bulletins apply, but only the phaser program in Ford’s documents paid a share of the bill, and it has ended.
2015–2017 with the six-speed: a recall, not a repair bill
NHTSA’s recall report covers these trucks under 26V237, and the repair is free. 2017 trucks came with either transmission, so confirm yours.
Other engines and years
Ford’s phaser program covered only the 3.5L. For other years, use our year-by-year F-150 problem and coverage guide.
Will Ford pay? What expired and when
Ford’s 21N03 program paid 100% of a phaser replacement up to 69,999 miles, 66% from 70,000 to 79,999 and 33% from 80,000 to 89,999, and it ended January 1, 2023.
| Document | Trucks | What it does | Status, 7 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSP 21N03 | 2017–2020 3.5L | One-time repair; passes to later owners | Ended 1 Jan 2023 |
| TSBs 25-2475, 23-2143 | 2017–2020 | Repair instructions; warranty limits unchanged | Current; no coverage |

The 5-year powertrain limit has passed for these trucks
Ford’s published warranty periods are 5 years or 60,000 miles for the powertrain, counted from the in-service date. A truck placed in service before October 2021 is past the time limit.
Phasers: Ford’s program ended January 1, 2023
📋 On the Record: Ford’s cam phaser program terms (CSP 21N03, Supplement 4, 25 March 2022) covered 2017–2020 F-150s with the 3.5L built 10 March 2016 to 30 November 2019. Status checked 7 October 2026: ended.
Is there a recall on the 10-speed?
We found no recall for the 2017–2020 harsh-shift problem in the documents reviewed on 7 October 2026. Confirm with NHTSA’s VIN recall search.
What the 2015–2017 recall covers
Recall 26V237 covers 1,392,935 six-speed trucks. The remedy was scheduled for July 2026, so ask your dealer.
What each repair costs and how to check your quote
Labor is Ford’s published hours times your shop’s rate: 11.8 hours for a 4×2 3.5L and 13.1 for a 4×4 3.5L on the transmission repair, and 9.5 to 9.6 for the four phaser units.
| Repair | Ford hours | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Leak test, passes | 1.0 | Test only |
| CDF cylinder, 4×2 3.5L | 11.8 | Test and repair |
| CDF cylinder, 4×4 3.5L | 13.1 | Test and repair |
| Four VCT units, 3.5L | 9.5–9.6 | Replacement |
Source: TSB 25-2475 (operations 252475A, C, G); CSP 21N03-S4 (9.5 h); TSB 23-2143 (9.6 h).
Repair the CDF cylinder or replace the whole unit?
Ford’s procedure replaces the CDF cylinder (JL3Z-7H351-B) and planetary container cylinder (PC3Z-7B177-A) after a failed leak test. For a remanufactured unit, get warranty terms and core charge in writing; some are under recall 25E070.
💵 What It Costs: One retailer lists a remanufactured 10R80 4×4 unit for 2018–2020 F-150s at $4,593.75 (7 October 2026). That is the unit only; labor, core charge, shipping and warranty terms are extra or unconfirmed.
Quote checklist
✅ Do This: Ask for an itemized quote showing the leak-test result, both cylinders and the seals. For phasers, ask for all four VCT units.
Full breakdowns: our 10-speed repair cost guide and phaser replacement cost guide.
Fix or sell: the test to run with your quote
Compare your itemized quote, after any coverage that applies, with the value gap between a working truck and one sold as-is.
Three numbers to compare
Use your quote after coverage, the value gap from the fix-or-sell calculator, and the price of a replacement truck. Another 2017–2020 3.5L truck carries the same documented exposure, because Ford’s phaser program has ended for all of them.
Selling with the problem
Buyers price in the repair, so get itemized quotes first. Disclose what you know; seller-disclosure rules vary by state. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.
If the truck slips, hunts or loses drive
Have any slipping, gear-hunting or loss of drive inspected by a qualified technician before you keep driving. Ford’s program document says a noisy phaser does not affect safety, performance or emissions, so shift problems are the ones to take in quickly.
⚠️ Watch Out: Delayed engagement means the truck may not move when you ask it to. Do not pull into cross traffic after that happens until it has been inspected.
What to ask the shop
✅ Do This: Ask the shop to read stored codes against TSB 25-2475 and run Ford’s leak test (operation 252475A, 1.0 hour). For a rattle, confirm it follows a cold soak and the build date is on or before 30 November 2019.
F-150 transmission and phaser questions
1. Is it worth fixing a transmission on an F-150?
Compare your itemized quote, after any coverage, with the value gap between a working truck and one sold as-is.
2. How much does it cost to fix a 2018 F-150 transmission?
Ford’s repair needs 11.8 hours on a 4×2 3.5L and 13.1 on a 4×4 3.5L; multiply by your shop’s rate, then add parts.
3. Does Ford cover F-150 transmission problems out of warranty?
Ford’s powertrain warranty is 5 years or 60,000 miles, and the 10-speed bulletin does not extend it. Ask your dealer about any extended plan.
4. Is there a recall on the F-150 10-speed transmission?
No recall covers the 2017–2020 10-speed shift problem as of 7 October 2026; enter your VIN in NHTSA’s recall search to be sure.
5. Did Ford extend the warranty on F-150 cam phasers?
Yes, program 21N03 extended phaser coverage on 2017–2020 3.5L trucks, but it ended January 1, 2023.
6. How do I know if my F-150 has bad cam phasers?
Ford describes a rattle when the engine starts after sitting, or a knock at hot idle, on 2017–2020 3.5L trucks. Have a technician confirm.
7. Can I sell an F-150 with a bad transmission?
Yes, but buyers will price in the repair, so get itemized quotes first and be ready to disclose what you know.
8. How many labor hours is a 10R80 repair?
Ford lists 11.8 to 13.1 hours for the 3.5L repair, test included, or 1.0 hour if the leak test passes.
9. What does the 2015–2017 F-150 downshift recall cover?
Recall 26V237 covers 2015–2017 six-speed F-150s built March 12, 2014 to August 18, 2017; the repair is free.
10. Should I buy a remanufactured transmission?
Get the unit’s warranty terms and core charge in writing, and confirm no open recall, such as 25E070, applies to it.
Before you decide
Check your VIN first, because a recall repair costs nothing. Then collect two itemized quotes showing Ford’s hours, and run both through the calculator. Everything here was checked on 7 October 2026; confirm status with your dealer before you pay.
