Lost Gears in Your 2017–2022 F-150 10-Speed? The Documented Cause

F-150 10R80 lost Gears caused by CDF clutch cylinder sleeve movement

Your 10-speed F-150 is skipping or losing gears — start here

Your 10R80 10-speed may be skipping gears, banging into the next one, or holding a gear out with the wrench light on. If so, Ford has a documented cause. Its current bulletins point to movement of the CDF clutch cylinder sleeve, which owners call the CDF drum bushing, on 2017–2022 F-150s.

Two facts decide your next step: model year and build date

Model year tells you which Ford bulletin applies. Build date tells you whether a 2021–2022 truck is included at all.

  • Still inside the 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty? Go to the coverage section.
  • Holding a repair quote? Go to the cost maths.
  • Not sure it’s a fault? Start with the symptoms.

Why the 2026 F-150 recall probably isn’t about your truck

The April 2026 downshift recall covers six-speed trucks only. See where your truck sits in our F-150 problems by year guide.

ℹ️ Safety Note: A transmission that drops to neutral or forces a harsh shift at speed can upset the truck and affect your control of it. This article is for general understanding only. If it happens, get off the road safely, and have a qualified technician inspect the transmission before more highway driving.

Skipping gears: normal 10-speed behavior or a failing CDF drum?

F-150 10-speed Gears showing normal skip-shifting versus abnormal lost Gears
Normal skip-shifting can differ from harsh, delayed, or abnormal gear behavior associated with a transmission fault.

Not every skipped gear is a fault. The failure has its own pattern.

Skip-shifting Ford designed in

Under light throttle, the 10-speed skips gears by design. A 1-3 or 3-5 upshift on its own is not a problem.

The failure pattern owners report

Ford’s bulletins list the warning signs:

  • Harsh engagement
  • Delayed engagement
  • Harsh shifts
  • Delayed shifts
  • An illuminated warning light

Large F-150 owner-forum threads describe a consistent version of this: 2nd and 4th skipped on most shifts, hard shifts into 3rd and 5th, then a stored code and a gear locked out. Which gears drop out depends on the clutch affected.

Codes Ford lists in the bulletin

Both bulletins list 29 possible codes, including P0731–P0736 and P07F6/P07F7. A code alone does not confirm this failure; the bulletin’s pressure test does. For broader 10R80 behavior, see our guide to F-150 10-speed transmission problems.

✅ Do This: Ask the shop to read and print stored codes and freeze-frame data. Ask them to note whether any code matches the list in Ford TSB 25-2126 (2017–2020) or TSB 25-2131 (2021–2022).

What actually fails: the CDF clutch cylinder sleeve

F-150 10R80 CDF sleeve movement causing hydraulic leakage and lost Gears
Cutaway illustration showing axial CDF clutch-cylinder sleeve movement and the resulting hydraulic leakage path.

Ford attributes the failure to “axial movement of the CDF clutch cylinder sleeve causing hydraulic circuit leaks.” In plain terms, a sleeve inside the drum slides out of place and fluid leaks from the circuit.

Bushing vs. sleeve: same part, two names

Owners call it the CDF drum bushing. Ford’s documents call it the CDF clutch cylinder sleeve. It sits inside the cylinder that holds the C, D and F clutch packs.

Why a hydraulic leak shows up as lost gears

🔍 Why It Happens: Each clutch pack clamps only when pressurized fluid pushes on it. If the sleeve moves, fluid escapes before it reaches the clutch, so the clutch slips or never fully applies. The gears that depend on it get skipped, flare, or engage with a bang.

Which F-150s Ford’s CDF bulletins cover, by build date

Ford covers this failure in two current bulletins, split at a 15 August 2022 build date.

2017–2020 trucks: TSB 25-2126

Read Ford’s TSB 25-2126 for 2017–2020 trucks. It replaced TSB 25-2018.

2021–2022 trucks built by 15 August 2022: TSB 25-2131

Read TSB 25-2131 for early 2021–2022 builds. It replaced TSB 24-2436. A Ford dealer can confirm your truck’s exact build date from its VIN.

Built after 15 August 2022 and the PowerBoost hybrid

Neither bulletin applies to trucks built after 15 August 2022. TSB 25-2131 also excludes the PowerBoost’s 10R80 MHT. We found no newer CDF bulletin for either group.

📋 On the Record: TSBs 25-2126 and 25-2131 both tell technicians to run a hydraulic leak test first. The CDF cylinder and the clutch and planetary container cylinder are replaced only if the test fails. Status checked 26 September 2026.

No recall, no free fix: what Ford’s bulletin actually pays for

As of 26 September 2026, there is no safety recall or extended-coverage program for the 10R80 CDF sleeve. A TSB is a repair procedure, not a free-repair promise. TSB 25-2131 says the repair is eligible only under existing warranty or extended service plan (ESP) coverage, and does not change those limits.

Why recall 26V237 doesn’t cover 10-speed trucks

Recall 26V237 (Ford campaign 26S28) covers 2015–2017 F-150s with the six-speed transmission built between 12 March 2014 and 18 August 2017. Its cause is a transmission range sensor signal fault, not the CDF sleeve. Read Ford’s recall filing for the six-speed trucks, or our breakdown of the 26S28 downshift recall.

The 5-year/60,000-mile maths for your truck

Ford’s 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage runs from your warranty start date, not the model year. For example, a truck that went into service on 1 November 2021 is covered until 1 November 2026 or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The dealer test, the repair, and what it should cost

Ford requires a pressure test before any parts are replaced, and its bulletins publish the labor hours.

The pressure test Ford requires before replacing parts

The technician measures line pressure while specific clutches are commanded on, then compares the readings in Ford’s calculator. If the test fails, the transmission comes out and is partly taken apart. The job finishes with an adaptive relearn.

Cost maths: Ford’s labor hours × your shop rate

💵 On these numbers: Costs shown are typical ranges, not quotes. Labour rates vary sharply by region and between dealer and independent shops, and parts pricing moves. Use these to judge whether a quote is in the right neighbourhood, not to predict your invoice.

TruckTest only (pass)Test + CDF replacement (fail)What it includes
2017–2020 F-1501.0 hr10.5–13.2 hrsFord warranty labor time only; parts extra
2021–2022 F-150 (built ≤15 Aug 2022)0.8 hr11.0–13.1 hrsFord warranty labor time only; parts extra

Source: labor operations in TSBs 25-2126 and 25-2131. Ranges vary by engine and 4×2/4×4.

💵 What It Costs: On the fail path, every $10 per hour of shop rate adds roughly $105–$132 in labor. Parts are extra; they include a new CDF cylinder, container cylinder and seal set. Ford’s hours are what it pays dealers under warranty, so ask how many hours a retail quote bills.

Bulletin repair vs. full replacement

A full transmission replacement costs more. Kelley Blue Book’s fair-repair ranges, parts and labor, are $5,238–$7,657 for a 2021 F-150 SuperCrew at ZIP 93454 and $8,704–$9,298 for a 2019 Regular Cab at ZIP 77002.

✅ Do This: Ask for “the CDF hydraulic leak test in TSB 25-2126” (or 25-2131 for 2021–2022). Get the pass or fail result in writing, and ask for the failed parts back.

Can you keep driving it while you decide?

That depends on how the truck behaves, not on the code.

What gets worse if you wait

When technicians open the transmission for this repair, Ford’s bulletins tell them to inspect other internal parts and flush the fluid cooler as needed. That means the final bill can grow beyond the CDF parts. Ford’s documents don’t say how fast that happens.

When to stop driving and tow it in

Stop and have the truck towed if it drops to neutral, won’t engage a gear, or shifts harshly enough to unsettle it at speed.

✅ Do This: Ask the shop to check the fluid for debris. Ask which other components they inspected under the bulletin’s note, and whether the cooler needs flushing.

F-150 10-speed lost gears: FAQ

1. Is the F-150 10-speed CDF drum problem a recall?

No. As of 26 September 2026, the 10R80 CDF drum problem is handled through technical service bulletins, not a safety recall or extended-coverage program.

2. Does the 2026 F-150 downshift recall cover the 10-speed?

No. Recall 26V237 (Ford 26S28) covers 2015–2017 F-150s with the six-speed transmission, not trucks with the 10R80 10-speed.

3. Which F-150 years have the CDF drum problem?

Ford’s bulletins cover 2017–2020 F-150s with the 10R80, plus 2021–2022 F-150s built on or before 15 August 2022, excluding PowerBoost.

4. Is it normal for an F-150 10-speed to skip gears?

Light-load gear skipping is by design on the 10-speed. Harsh or delayed shifts, a locked-out gear or the wrench light are not normal.

5. What codes does CDF drum failure set on an F-150?

Ford’s bulletins list 29 possible codes, including P0731–P0736 and P07F7. A code alone doesn’t confirm it; the bulletin’s pressure test does.

6. How many labor hours is an F-150 CDF drum repair?

Ford allows 10.5–13.2 hours on 2017–2020 F-150s and 11.0–13.1 hours on 2021–2022 trucks, labor only, before parts. Shop rates vary by region.

7. Will Ford pay for the CDF drum repair after warranty?

The bulletin doesn’t extend coverage. After the 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty ends, you pay unless a Ford extended service plan covers it.

8. Is it safe to drive an F-150 with CDF drum failure?

Not if it drops to neutral, won’t engage, or shifts harshly enough to unsettle the truck at speed; have it towed. Have a qualified technician run the bulletin’s CDF test.

9. Did Ford fix the CDF drum in later F-150s?

Ford’s current bulletins stop at trucks built by 15 August 2022. We found no CDF bulletin for later builds, which isn’t proof of a fix.

10. Can a transmission relearn fix CDF drum failure on an F-150?

Not if the sleeve has moved. When Ford’s leak test fails, the bulletin’s fix is replacing the CDF cylinder, followed by an adaptive relearn.

Your next three moves

  1. Match your model year and build date to the bulletin table above.
  2. Confirm your warranty start date and mileage with a Ford dealer.
  3. Book the CDF test by bulletin number, and get the result in writing before approving a teardown.
